Ayahuasca may not be for everyone, but it was for me. As an addict I had no fear of death, I subconsciously committed suicide daily with every shot of whiskey. Not having a fear of leaving this world behind is what brought me to the Amazon Jungle. “You’ll get kidnapped, raped or murdered!” they all said. Lions, tigers and bears, Oh My! I told them that if I died some tragic death, at least I tried… at least I lived.

You see, addicts don’t fear death; we live it everyday. What we’re afraid of is actually living, facing our fears, not feeling good enough, rejection, abandonment, reliving past traumas and abuse. But death, there is peace in that.

Up until a year ago I had been an alcoholic for almost a decade. I grew up in a very physically and verbally abusive household with both parental figures being severe alcoholics. It didn’t help that my mother and stepfather both worked in law enforcement. This made it difficult for anyone from the outside to step in.

At the age of sixteen I was kicked out of my home and left to live on the streets. To cope with the fear of survival and my hunger pains I would turn to alcohol, heroin or cocaine. Whatever I could get my hands on. By the age of seventeen I was pregnant and in yet another abusive relationship.

Thankfully, this beautiful child of mine grounded me. He brought me peace and stability. More importantly he brought me purpose. At nineteen I was a young single mother. I began dancing at a strip club, as it was the most convenient way to make a living. I could stay at home during the day, raise my child and have an alter-ego party girl lifestyle by night. It was a buffet of cash, booze and attention that temporarily filled my feelings of emptiness. This continued for the next twelve years.

Sometimes it was easy, living on autopilot, but most of the time it wasn’t. As most of us know, addiction is a progressive disease that will eventually kill you. At my worst I could easily down a bottle of 101 proof whiskey and chase it with a handful of Xanax. I was at the point where I knew I didn’t have much time left on this earth.

We’ve all see that show Intervention, yeah… it was like that. What these shows, the media and doctors don’t tell you is that there are cures out there that are in the form of plant medicines. One is Ayahuasca, a South American tea made from the vine of the banisteriopsis caapi (which naturally contains an MAOI) and the chacruna leaf (which naturally contains DMT). Another form is iboga, the root of an African jungle shrub so powerful that is said to cure heroine addiction in one dose.

At the time I was looking into iboga treatments in Costa Rica. The average cost at the centers I was looking at was over ten grand and I didn’t have that type of money. Therefore I decided that my focus would stay on Ayahuasca. Also known as the vine of death, the vine of souls and yage.

Through my investigations it became evident that these medicines provided more hope for addicts than that of western methods. It was curious to me why these plant medicines weren’t legal in the U.S. My research continued over the next few years, meanwhile my addiction spiraled out of control. I was a bartender with full access to my fix and the cash to enable my self-destructive lifestyle. When I wasn’t working in a bar I was drinking in one. Always on one side of the bar or the other.

In May of 2013 I finally got the job I always wanted working for a big name in the industry. I thought that this was finally going to make me happy but it didn’t. My drinking and depression worsened to the point where I only left my bed to go to the bar to numb myself enough to go to work. Then do it all over again. I was at my bottom and found myself looking into every western recovery program I could find. Some I had already tried and the thought of a Twelve Step meeting, sitting in a circle talking about my problems, didn’t resonate with me.

Don’t get me wrong, it may work for some but I didn’t feel it was for me. I knew many people who had tried this method and failed. The success rate of “rehab” is shockingly low and I wanted a cure. I didn’t want to struggle with addiction every day for the rest of my life. In my mind I would have rather of kept drinking. Same struggle, same thought pattern. Like an addictive obsession my mind kept bringing me back to Ayahuasca. I now know this wasn’t my mind but the sacred vine calling out to me. I made up my decision, I was either going to go down to South America and explore this option or I was ultimately going to die. This was it, no looking back.

After carefully researching and making connections I got in touch with a family in Ecuador. I booked a flight for November 11th, scrambled to get my passport, quit my job and learned a few phrases in Spanish. A month later I found myself in the Amazon Jungle about to drink one of the most powerful hallucinogens known to man. I was terrified, my life as I knew it was about to change.

Before my first ceremony I sat in the darkness of the jungle amongst seven strangers who all looked just as terrified as I felt. I thought about my journey to this place, to this very moment. How I had traveled for the first time internationally as a woman who didn’t speak the native tongue. That was enough to show me that there was a whole life to be lived and all I had to do was go for it.

I drank my cup of Ayahuasca and gave it thanks. Those first two ceremonies I didn’t feel much. They say that the medicine is gentle with you and likes you to get to know her first. I could feel her moving through my body like an anaconda “diagnosing me.” I didn’t have many visions but there were a few letting me know that I was safe and had nothing to fear.

On the third day we hiked further into the jungle and prepared to go deeper into our consciousness. We didn’t drink Ayahuasca that night; instead we had a tobacco ceremony. We drank a whole bowl full of tea made of mapacho or sacred tobacco. It was to further purify and cleanse our bodies to prepare us to accept the medicine of Ayahuasca.

We had to drink this as fast as possible and wait 45 minutes and then we would purge. After this ceremony the Shaman, more commonly referred to in the Amazon as Maestro or Curandero, turned to me and said, “You have not bled for a long time.” This was true but how did he know this? I didn’t tell anyone. I had a thirteen year old son but had been trying for years to get pregnant and couldn’t. I felt as if another child would heal my sorrow.

I had been to different doctors and referred to specialists but couldn’t get any answers. He said he wanted to give me a healing. He cleansed negative energy from what I now know was my sacral chakra (below the belly button, just above the pubic bone). I went to bed that night confused. What was this? What was going on? What am I doing here? I didn’t feel any different. Maybe this isn’t working.

The following night we all gathered in the Maloka, or ceremony house. I will start by saying that what happened in that ceremony was the most incredible experience of my life. As the medicine started to take effect I began to notice a veil was lifting. I was entering another place or dimension. I was being raised out of my body by beings made of colorful light. These beings did not look like hallucinations. It felt as if my physical eyes were closed but my third eye was completely opened. This made me nervous but also felt assuring and safe, like a child protected by an unseen force. These entities or beings, later known to me as my “healing team” surrounded me and opened up my chest filling it with a bright white light.

About fifteen of them took turns blowing and sending more light into my heart. I was filled with the most tremendous feeling of love words cannot even begin to describe. It was a warm, infinite unconditional love. Tears were streaming out of my eyes and for the first time. I felt pure joy. It was beyond anything I had ever experienced before.

When they were finished with my heart they started at my feet and went through every cell in my body cleansing out toxins. They got to my stomach showing me that the processed food I had been eating was poisoning me. They came to my lungs and showed me all the damage that years of smoking had caused. My stomach started bubbling with all of this sickness they had cleansed from my organs. They brought me back into my body so I could purge but I struggled to make it to the bathroom.

It violently came out from both ends for what seemed like hours. Vomiting and defecating simultaneously while having visions that I was releasing pain, fear, years of alcohol and drugs, toxins from food, childhood trauma, rape, abandonment, rejection, self doubt and self hate. All of which were venomously pouring out of my body at the same time. I was shown that in order to make room for love I would have to purge all of the negativity in my life. I wanted it all out. I was done with all of it and ready to let it go.

After the visions stopped and the purging subsided I started to clean my self up. I noticed blood. I had started my period. I hadn’t bled in over five years. This was a miracle. This was real. Everything that I had just experienced was real. The last thing these spirits said to me before they left that night was the only thing that mattered was love. That we were all connected. We were one and in that moment I felt a part of it all, every tree in the jungle, every animal and bug, the water, the wind and the ground I walked on. We were all made up of the same thing, energy and love.

I spent the next six months traveling Peru and Ecuador learning the secrets of different plant medicines. Ayahuasca cured me of infertility, hypothyroidism, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and most importantly it freed me from addiction. It cleansed my body of toxins, reset my brain to a pre-addictive state and expelled my negative thought patterns. I was able to step outside my world –– as an ego, as a victim, and as an addict –– to see who I truly was, what I truly was, a being created of love. I understood that this body was a gift for me to use to explore this beautiful garden of a planet. Liberated from fear, limits and restrictions, if I choose to walk the path of love, I would remain free, but it was a choice.

Over the next few months my weight stabilized and I felt more alive than ever. I started eating only raw natural living foods. I made sure to drink clean water free of fluoride and other chemicals. I had been initiated by the plants, spirits and Mother Earth herself. The secrets of these plant medicines have been kept hidden in the Amazon jungle for thousands of years, and have seemingly been waiting for the moment that we needed them most. That time is now.

Our beautiful home and planet is dying and we are being called to save her. The only way to do this is to wake up and start loving ourselves and every living thing on the earth.

We must start with the food we eat. This is most important. After this everything else will start to fall into place. Ask yourself: “Am I loving myself by putting this in my body? Does it nourish and heal?” Like the cells in our body, we make up this earth, just like the planets make up our solar system and the universe. If we are not feeding and hydrating our cells properly they cannot do their job and this will cause DIS-EASE. “Let food by thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”

The reality of our outer worlds is simply a reflection of our inner worlds. We need our Mother to live, so do your part and start loving yourself. It’s not easy, I know. I’ve spent the last year cleansing my body and mind, dealing with my past and fear of the future. As I write this today I can say that I have no desire to harm my body with any substance or toxic chemical from food or otherwise. If it didn’t grow from the Earth with love I don’t want to put it in my body. I am now a messenger of the Mother with only this heart full of love and a story to tell. I love you all.

National carrier EgyptAir said a plane carrying 69 passengers and crew on a flight from Paris to Cairo had gone missing on Thursday, disappearing from radar over the Mediterranean sea.

“An official source at EgyptAir stated that Flight MS804, which departed Paris at 23:09 (CEST), heading to Cairo has disappeared from radar,” the airline said on its official Twitter account.

Later Tweets by EgyptAir said the plane, which was travelling at an altitude of 37,000 feet (11,280m), disappeared soon after entering Egyptian airspace. The aircraft was carrying 59 passengers and 10 crew.

According to flightradar24.com, the plane was an Airbus A320 and its last known position was above the Mediterranean sea.

An Airbus A321 operated by Russia’s Metrojet crashed in the Sinai in 31 October 2015, killing all 224 people on board. Russia and Western governments have said the plane was likely brought down by a bomb, and the Islamic State militant group said it had smuggled an explosive on board.

Reuters reported in January that an EgyptAir mechanic, whose cousin joined Islamic State in Syria, is suspected of planting the bomb, according to sources familiar with the matter.

In March, an EgyptAir plane flying from Alexandria to Cairo was hijacked and forced to land in Cyprus by a man with what authorities said was a fake suicide belt. He was arrested after giving himself up.

France’s aviation authority could not immediately be reached for comment.

Dow continues to mark time around the 17,500 level…up a couple of hundred points…and down a couple of hundred. Disappointing earnings has the market looking for direction from somewhere. Gold was steady; the Aussie dollar is up a tad; meanwhile, oil hit a seven-month high.

Interest rates are the hot topic of late. How low will they go? Will the RBA cut another 0.5%? Or even a full 1% or more? Who knows. Least of all the RBA. Taking rates lower is not going to shake the economy out of its deflationary funk.

Central banks have proven they cannot control the monster they’ve created. Which is why one of my ‘election policies’ was to abolish the RBA, letting the market fix the problem instead.

My weekend Daily Reckoning article, ‘Would You Vote for My Policies?’ evoked plenty of feedback.

The proposed policies are, to say the least, unorthodox in our progressive world. In addition to abolishing the Reserve Bank, I also suggested denying the right to vote for those in receipt of welfare — and those that are on the government payroll — making the boards of banks personally responsible for losses, and turning Canberra into a ghost town.

The kindest slap down on my policies was ‘I think that proposal is ridiculous.’Others were less polite.

However, I did manage to garner a few votes. But not quite enough to get me a taxpayer-funded refund of my campaign expenses — oh, and what a joke that little scam is…

In the world we’ve grown up in, there’s no question my policies flirt with the lunatic fringe.

The mainstream would have a field day lampooning my policies…much mirth would be had at my expense. But is it mainstream journalism that’s playing the fool? A little more on that later.

By today’s standards my policies are considered outlandish. However, in the context of history, they’re not new or all that radical.

The US Federal Reserve only came into existence in 1913. Prior to that, the world managed to function without the guiding hand of economic academics.

Granted, the world is more complicated these days — and a good deal of that complication has been a function of central banks doing everything in their power to advance a debt-dependent economic growth machine…ably assisted by the banking sector.

The economic doctors have overmedicated the system to the point where we’ve lost all immunity to any financial virus. We are economic weaklings completely dependent on central banks to administer the latest, and even more lethal, vaccine to ward off the ‘nasties’.

Had the markets been left to their own unpredictable devices to navigate the business cycles, then perhaps our legacy might be a system that is far more robust and better able to handle the highs and lows that come with market cycles.

Central banks, the Reserve Bank included, have done us no favours with their attempts (meddling) to smooth out the rough and tumble of markets. Rather than building resilience, they have created a society of sooks… ‘Please drop interest rates so I can afford my debt’, and ‘please Janet do something to prop up markets’.

A genuine market-based economy does no such favours for people.

Making bank directors personally liable for losses is also not a new idea. It existed in the US up until the 1930s.

In 1932, John A Skiles wrote a paper titled: ‘Individual Personal Liability of [US] Bank Directors for negligent and excess loans’.

Here’s a short extract from the paper: ‘The civil liability of bank directors for making bad loans may arise either under the common law or under special statute such as the excess loan statutes in force in many jurisdictions.’

Funny thing, these statutes, along with the bank directors being held personally liable, went the way of the horse and buggy. I wonder whether it was the depositors who asked for these laws to be repealed, or the bankers in cahoots with the legislators? What do you think?

Would making the banks directors’ personal assets the first casualties in a banking crisis make them act a little more prudently? Perhaps the growth-at-all-costs mentality might be a bit more tempered? Again, what do you think?

Why would I want to turn Canberra into a ghost town?

It was former US President Gerald Ford that said ‘A government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take from you everything you have.’

Be careful what you wish for when you ask for more from government. The beast will become so big it will consume you. We need less government, and more personal responsibility. How do you do this? Hang out the ‘closed for business’ sign in Canberra.

While denying the vote to those directly dependent on government for their income (partly or wholly) will never work in a democracy, the basis for proposing the concept is based on conflict of interest.

If you are a government employee, are you going to vote in favour of a policy to shrink the public sector? If you are in receipt of welfare, are you going to support a party that advocates a reduction in entitlements? While I have absolutely zero hard evidence to support this claim, my guess is the majority will act out of self-interest and vote against both proposals…even though the proposals would be in the long term interests of our nation — and the unborn taxpayers who’ll inherit the bill.

My proposals, while impractical in our modern society, are designed to provoke thinking.

While we think we think for ourselves, there is a very powerful propaganda machine out there that is designed to influence public opinion.

To prove that is not some conspiracy theory, here’s a couple of news article I came across recently.

David Samuel’s wrote a rather long essay in the New York Times on 5 May 2016 titled, ‘The Aspiring Novelist Who Became Obama’s Foreign-Policy Guru’.

Ben Rhodes was the subject of the essay. Ben who?

Ben Rhodes is President Barack Obama’s deputy national security adviser and spokesman.

How’s this for a frank admission (emphasis mine):

‘Rhodes had to sell the Iranian nuclear deal to a skeptical American public. He freely admits that he did so by manipulating a select group of reporters that he and staff think are idiots and moulded them into his own personal echo chamber.

‘It wasn’t difficult. “All these newspapers used to have foreign bureaus,” he told Samuels. “Now they don’t. They call us to explain to them what’s happening in Moscow and Cairo. Most of the outlets are reporting on world events from Washington. The average reporter we talk to is 27 years old, and their only reporting experience consists of being around political campaigns. That’s a sea change. They literally know nothing.”’
Reporters that know nothing, that are being fed an ‘official’ version of events, pass on those ‘truths’ to an even more gullible public.

Then there was this article published by Bloomberg on 31 March 2016, titled ‘How to Hack an Election’.

Here are some extracts from the article:

‘Andre´s Sepu´lveda rigged elections throughout Latin America for almost a decade. He tells his story for the first time.

‘He says he wants to tell his story because the public doesn’t grasp the power hackers exert over modern elections or the specialized skills needed to stop them.

‘“I have always said that there are two types of politics—what people see and what really makes things happen. I worked in politics that are not seen.”

‘As for Sepu´lveda, his insight was to understand that voters trusted what they thought were spontaneous expressions of real people on social media more than they did experts on television and in newspapers. He knew that accounts could be faked and social media trends fabricated, all relatively cheaply. He wrote a software program, now called Social Media Predator, to manage and direct a virtual army of fake Twitter accounts. The software let him quickly change names, profile pictures, and biographies to fit any need. Eventually, he discovered, he could manipulate the public debate as easily as moving pieces on a chessboard…

‘On the question of whether the US presidential campaign is being tampered with, he is unequivocal. “I’m 100 percent sure it is,” he says.’
While they did not ask Sepu´lveda about the Australian election, it’s a safe bet it too is being tampered with.

While this may not come as a surprise to you, I think the extent of the manipulation in traditional and social media goes way beyond what these insiders have publicly admitted to.

Sorting the truth from the lies is an exhausting, and largely futile, exercise.

Who really wants to know the ugly truth?

When the choice comes to enlightenment or entitlement, the crowd takes the latter every time.

I’ll leave you with one final thought from Edward R Murrow: ‘A nation of sheep will beget a government of wolves.’

In the normally quiet and small town of North Catasauqua, Pennsylvania, a concerned citizen called police to assist an injured cat named Sugar that had wandered in his yard.

Police ended up killing the cat.

North Catasagua police officer Leighton Pursell said the cat hissed at him, which made him fear for his safety, so he pulled out his shotgun and shot Sugar in the neck. He then tossed the carcass in a Dumpster without trying to find its owner.

Sugar’s owner, Tom Newhart, was distraught and enraged, launching Residents became enraged and launched a Facebook page called “Justice for Sugar,” which called for Pursell to be terminated and criminally charged.

Earlier this month, after a five-month investigation, Pursell received a summary citation for cruelty to animals; a slap on the wrist considering he could have faced a misdemeanor or even a felony charge of animal cruelty. It’s nothing more than a ticket.

But his lawyer is vowing to fight the citation anyway.

According to Lehigh Valley Live:

“He came upon an attack in violation of the borough ordinance with an animal that had no tags; no sign of ownership; was injured,” Asteak said. “In accordance with borough police regulations, he did what was required of him under the regulations and in his judgment at the time. He did not have an animal control officer to call upon and consequently he was required to use force.”

Asteak said Pursell considered the cat a threat.

“He viewed the animal as injured, snarling and a threat to public safety on a private property owner’s property who wanted it gone,” Asteak said. “He had no choice but do do what he did under his code of conduct.”

The incident took place on December 6, 2015 after the cat had escaped its owners home, making its way five houses down where it settled under a grill. Realizing the cat was injured, Mike Lienert, the owner of the home, called police.

The responding officer, Pursell, retrieved his shotgun and ended the cat’s life without attempting to lure the cat or call animal control to have the cat assessed.

At first, North Catasauqua Police Department refused to provide the officer’s name, but the Justice for Sugar Facebook page kept growing, leading to calls to the police department to start an investigation.

Newhart stated the following when launching the Facebook page.

“Very unfortunate news. Last Sunday our oldest cat, Sugar, had gotten out of the house and was lost about five houses away. The homeowner couldn’t detain her, so he called the cops. N Catty cop Leighton Pursell showed up. The cop I guess didn’t want to make any effort to lure and catch her for us to claim, so he pulled out his shotgun and shot her dead !!! I managed to claim her body and had her X-rayed and examined by the vet. In fact, she was not hurt at all.

“My family and I had Sugar at 4 weeks old, and my wife bottle fed her like a baby. She was almost 6 years old. We are trying to get charges filed for animal abuse, reckless endangerment and illegal discharging of a firearm in the borough. The blogger who claimed that Ted Cruz’s dad was in connection with John F. Kennedy’s murder has been found dead in his home. Do you think that this has anything to do with his blog post about Cruz? Or was he simply depressed?

A prolific Indiana political blogger wrote an ominous post last week predicting a Donald Trump victory in his state — and soon afterward committed suicide, police said.
Gary Welsh, a lawyer who managed his Advance Indiana blog since 2005, was found in his Indianapolis apartment around 8 a.m. Sunday with a gunshot wound, according to the Indianapolis Star. Officers found him in a stairwell, dead at the scene, according to a police report.
Police ruled Welsh’s death a suicide, but have not released any details about what may have motivated it.

Just days before he was found dead, Welsh, 53, filed a final post for his blog, predicting Trump will win the Hoosier State’s GOP presidential primary Tuesday.
But his post took dark turn, even for a piece discussing a Donald Trump victory.

“If I’m not around to see the vote results, my prediction is that Trump wins Indiana with just shy of 50% of the vote,” Welsh wrote.
Two readers seemed confused or concerned about his cryptic comment.
According to the Indianapolis Business Journal:

Welsh, 53, wrote the widely followed conservative blog Advance Indiana, which he launched more than a decade ago. He also was a practicing attorney.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department’s incident report says officers were dispatched to the Lockerbie Glove Factory Lofts, 430 N. Park Ave., before 8 a.m. Sunday after receiving a report of a person found shot in the stairwell of the building. The witnesses who called 911 reported that a gun was next to the body.
IMPD Capt. Richard Riddle said he expects an autopsy will be conducted Monday. He said the Marion County Coroner’s Office will determine the official cause of death.
Welsh was known for hard-hitting blog posts that took swipes at both Democrats and Republicans.
His final post, published Friday, summarized the latest poll results in the GOP presidential primary battle between Donald Trump, Sen. Ted Cruz and Ohio Gov. John Kasich.

Newly-reported information by independent investigator Wayne Madsen ties Rafael Bienvenido Cruz to Oswald’s work for the supposedly pro-Castro group in New Orleans during the summer of 1963.
Madsen claims that one of the Cubans pictured with Oswald handing out pamphlets for Fair Play outside the International Trade Mart in August, 1963 is Rafael Cruz. The ITM’s founder, Clay Shaw, worked for the CIA and was the only other man in the U.S. to face criminal charges in connection with the Kennedy assassination, when NOLA district attorney James Garrison brought charges in what he contended was a wide government conspiracy to assassinate Kennedy. Shaw was acquitted of the charges and Garrison humiliated after federal agencies worked hand-in-hand with mainstream media to discredit his case.
Cruz’s Cuban father, also named Rafael Cruz, operated an electronic business in Matanzas, Cuba tied to the American company, RCA. While reporters have been able to confirm an instance where the elder Cruz was arrested by Cuban police and brutally beaten, reporters have found no confirmation the arrest had anything to do with work for forces supporting Castro’s efforts to overthrow the pro-American Batista regime. After arriving by a ferry boat from Cuba in Key West, Florida in 1957, Cruz’ father made his way to Austin, Texas where he managed to enroll at the University of Texas and earn a degree in mathematics in 1961.

The fact that Ron Paul’s lifelong efforts to promote a peaceful foreign policy continue to light fires in the imaginations of his fellow Americans. Any chance her fellow neocons’ near-total control of Washington’s foreign policy might be slipping sends Rubin scurrying to her keyboard to launch another spit-bomb.

Rubin has been apoplectic for months over the possibility that Donald Trump may wind up the Republican nominee for the presidency. She followed six of the stages of grief but skipped the final one, acceptance, and quickly returned to the first one, shock. Forget about the fact that when it comes to foreign policy, there isn’t all that much for non-interventionists to get excited about when it comes to Donald Trump. Under a Secretary Paul there would be no endless hectoring calls to the president demanding that this or that country be “liberated” with smart power and smart bombs. Under Secretary Paul there would be no legions of US-funded NGOers sent to undermine the electoral processes overseas. “I would never, ever point my firearm at anyone, including an officer of the law, unless they pointed their firearm at me,” asserted Nevada Assemblywoman Michele Fiore in an interview with Steve Sebelius of KLAS-8. “Now, once you point your firearm at me, I’m sorry, then it becomes self defense. So, whether you’re a stranger, a bad guy — or an officer — and you point your gun at me; and I have to decide whether it’s my life … well, I choose my life.”

Fiore’s obviously explosive statement comes amid her run for the Republican Party nomination for an open seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. During the interview, she characterized the federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM), in its overreach, as “nothing more than … a bureaucrat agency of terrorism.”

Sebelius queried Fiore on whether she felt Second Amendment protections should allow citizens the right to brandish their firearms at a “duly authorized law enforcement officer who is just out there doing his job.”

Fiore explained the right to self defense with a firearm applies to anyone who brandishes a weapon against you first — regardless of the person’s job status or title.

The Nevada Assemblywoman previously made headlines when she helped arrange the end of the occupation of a BLM building near Burns, Oregon — which culminated in a standoff between law enforcement and armed but peaceful ranchers and militia members.

LaVoy Finnicum, one of the BLM protesters, was shot and killed by law enforcement following a pursuit near Burns, when he exited the vehicle he had been driving in order to draw almost inevitable gunfire away from the passengers.

Known for her vehement support of the Second Amendment right to bear arms, Fiore asserted last year college women should arm themselves to prevent or thwart being raped — because everyone has “the right to defend him or herself from sexual assault.”

“If these young, hot little girls on campus have a firearm, I wonder how many men will want to assault them,” Fiore told the New York Times. “The sexual assaults that are occurring would go down once these sexual predators get a bullet in the head.”

Somewhat more controversially, Fiore proposed the need to arm school teachers and administrators to quash or prevent mass school shootings.

Her latest statement — supporting self defense against cops — echoes a law passed in Indiana to massive public support that made legal shooting public servants if they enter a home illegally.

According to the Indiana law, a person is “justified in using reasonable force against a public servant if the person reasonably believes” such force is necessary to protect themselves or others in their home if they reasonably suspect “the imminent use of unlawful force,” among other clauses.

To wit, that very law helped overturn a man’s conviction for battery on a law enforcement officer in March 2015, as The Free Thought Project reported.

As police carelessly break down doors on innocent people’s homes — by simply having the wrong address — such self defense as protected by Indiana’s law, and as proposed by Michele Fiore seems to be common sense.

It has emerged that the number of United States police officers charged with fatal shootings of innocent civilians hit a record high in 2015, with an increase of almost 300% from previous years.

Although some observers believe that the number should have exceeded the 300%, due to the frequent spate of killings of innocent unarmed citizens by the police in 2015, activists say it is a sign of awakening by the country to put a stop to police violence against innocent citizens.

2015 recorded a number of protests by citizens, largely by African-Americans against the use of deadly force by police officers against the Black community, in the country. It even led to the prominence of the movement known as Black Lives Matter, which was established in 2013 to campaign against cops’ violence toward black people.

Analysts say police body cameras and bystanders’ videos helped; with an increase in reckless officers themselves standing before the law last year.

An associate professor of criminology at Ohio’s Bowling Green State University, Philip Stinson who authored the statistics, said the figure increased from an average of about five a year from 2005 to 2014. Mr Stinson sifted through court records and media reports as part of the research for the Justice Department on police crimes and arrests. The following were some of the incidents captured in the statistics.

In August 2015, the Free Thought Project reported that the two Albuquerque officers who murdered James Boyd on camera, would be charged with murder. That same month, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution also reported that two former East Point police officers had been indicted on charges; they murdered a 24-year-old father by repeatedly using their tasers on him while he was handcuffed and sitting in a creek.

In the same August again, the Washington Post reported that a former Fairfax County police officer was charged with second-degree murder, nearly two years after he shot an unarmed Springfield man who stood with his hands raised in the doorway of his home.

In July, Officer Ray Tensing was officially charged with murder after his body cam showed an unarmed man killed, who simply tried to drive away. In June, Officer Michael Slager was indicted after he was captured on video shooting Walter Scott in the back, all over a broken tail light.

In November, Officers Derrick Stafford and Norris Greenhouse, Jr. were charged and are currently being held, each with a $1 million bail for the murder of 6-year-old Jeremy Mardis and the attempted murder of his father, Chris Few.

Also in November, it was announced that Jason Van Dyke, the cop who killed Laquan McDonald by shooting him 16 times as he walked away, would be charged with murder. In fact, Van Dyke became the 15th officer in America to face such charges in 2015, a 300% increase from 2014, according to the statistics released by Mr Stinson. In ten of those 15 cases, the officers were seen on video killing their victims.

Although as a former cop himself, Stinson was blunt with the truth. He said he doubts that if there had not been video evidence to prove the recklessness of the indicted officers beyond reasonable doubt, it would have been difficult for officials to prosecute such officers.

“If you take the cases with the video away, you are left with what we would expect to see over the past 10 years – about five cases. You have to wonder if there would have been charges if there wasn’t video evidence,” Mr Said.

The Free Thought Project reports that the sentiment echoed by Stinson is true, and that even in some cases that there were video evidence against officers; officials were still reluctant to prosecute the officers.

“Adam,” a 38-year-old living in Germany, recently began illegally importing drugs. Thanks to a stranger he met on Facebook, he managed to find an online international distributor of his drug of choice in India. He used a forwarding service to route the shipment through the U.K. so it seemed less suspicious, and then to him in Germany. Adam, who requested a pseudonym to protect his identity, was careful to order no more than 90 pills at a time—just enough to fly under the radar.

As much as this might sound like a story of narcotics trafficking, it is far from it. Adam is ordering pills that helps prevent a disease: HIV. We’re talking about Truvada, a name-brand pill that was approved in the United States in 2012, for individuals at higher risk of contracting HIV, who take medication each day to reduce the likelihood that they’ll become infected if exposed. It’s called pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP for short.

The pill has been estimated to be 99 percent effective when taken daily in preventing the transmission of HIV—a development that has been hailed as revolutionary—and yet it remains unapproved for that use in most of the world.

As a result, in many countries it’s difficult to find a doctor willing to prescribe it—not to mention to get healthcare coverage of the brand-name drug, which can run anywhere from more than $500 to over $1,000 a month. This leaves many around the globe who want the drug with few good options. Those include journeying to other countries where the drug is more readily available, ordering generic versions of the drug from online pharmacies, employing forwarding services and generally working the hell out of the system. These are a lot of hoops to jump through—but for many, PrEP is well worth it.

“It’s really about [individuals asking], ‘How do I get the healthcare that I need? There’s not a clear path so I have to get creative,’” said Jim Pickett, director of prevention advocacy and gay men’s health at the AIDS Foundation of Chicago, speaking to the situation abroad.

Though Truvada is already used throughout the world for HIV treatment, it remains widely unapproved for prevention. In addition to in the U.S., preventative Truvada has been okayed in Canada, Kenya, Peru, and South Africa. France, Israel and Switzerland have approved it for off-label use, which means greater accessibility and government coverage as public health programs can begin formally offering PrEP. Activists in the United Kingdom were widely expecting approval, but last month NHS England, the national health service, passed the buck on the decision, arguing that local authorities should be responsible for commissioning the drug. Just this week, the NHS announced it would reconsider the decision following a public outcry.

Despite its promise, PrEP hasn’t escaped controversy. The president of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, Michael Weinstein, infamously called it a “party drug” and argued that it would undermine condom use. It’s easy to imagine that such critiques—which PrEP activists argue are punishingly moralizing and repeat the same arguments made against the emergence of the birth control pill and condoms—might factor in the delayed approval. Although, some suspect the hold up has more to do with the potential cost of coverage in countries with government-run healthcare. “When the state is paying, they’re slower,” said Pickett.

As a result of this PrEP blackout, thousands have gathered online to swap tips about how to navigate their country’s laws to obtain Truvada. A major resource is the Facebook group PrEP Facts, which has nearly 14,000 members. Users from all over the world post about their successes or failures with obtaining PrEP where they live, along with the names of reliable online pharmacies. Two major sites have popped up in the U.K.—Prepster.info and iwantprepnow.co.uk—to both guide people on their options and agitate for approval.

“As with anything, there are the earlier adopters who are figuring it out and passing it along to others who are on the sidelines,” said Pickett. “I really see it as creativity, I see it as resilience. These are people who really want to stay healthy. They want to have enjoyable, pleasurable sex lives that don’t leave them with HIV.”

Judging from online forums like PrEP Facts, the most popular avenue for obtaining the drug in countries where it is unapproved is ordering generic versions of Truvada sold by online pharmacies. But many countries, including the U.S. and most of Europe, outlaw these shipments. That’s why Adam, who gets his supply through alldaychemist.com, uses a forwarding service that routes his order through the U.K., where these orders are allowed. It’s less suspect that way, he says.

Given all the fees involved, he ends up paying roughly $76 for a bottle of 30 pills—and a moderate amount of worry. “I’m relying on customs being seriously understaffed and therefore unable to pay too much attention to shipments within the EU, with the exception of recreational drugs maybe,” he said. “Most definitely, the current situation provides far less peace of mind than I would like to have and that makes it difficult to recommend PrEP to others.”
Nicholas Feustel, a 44-year-old filmmaker living in Hamburg, orders generic Truvada through an online pharmacy and has it shipped to his partner, who lives in the UK. He visits him regularly and picks up his supply when he does, as German law allows for travelers to bring in a limited supply of generic pills, and it’s legal in the UK to receive such shipments. Not counting the cost of his plane tickets, a 30-day supply costs him around $80, including delivery costs. “I’m very privileged,” he said of his ability to afford frequent trips out of the country.

Will Nutland, co-founder of the UK-based Prepster.info, is tapped into a network of international PrEP activists and is aware of a couple handfuls of people who are flying to other countries just to obtain generic Truvada—and that number is only growing. Pickett, who has undertaken a study of men using the drug where it isn’t approved, has observed the same phenomenon. “I know stories of people who are going to Thailand and the Philippines to get Truvada and then going back home,” he said.

People encounter trouble even in places where it’s legal to order generic drugs from online pharmacies. Many countries, including within the U.K., restrict the amount you can order at a time, hold up shipments of generics in customs or charge import fees. Trevor, a 48-year-old from London, gets his generic Truvada imported from Singapore. Twice, the non-descript packages have made it straight to his front door, but the most recent time it mysteriously disappeared in transit. He ordered a replacement shipment and it got delayed in customs. In the meantime, to tide him over, he had to borrow pills from three different friends.

Gaps in access are a critical concern, since the pill is meant to be taken daily, and inconsistent use confers less protection from HIV.

None of this is to mention the uncertainty about the quality of these generics. Nutland, in concert with I Want Prep Now and a select few participating doctors, is trying to do something about that. They have been working on testing the blood of people taking mail-order generics, each of which has a batch number, to see if they are taking an authentic generic. So far, each one they’ve tested has passed the test. “We’re publicizing the batch numbers so that if someone else has that same batch number they know that the generic is the real thing,” he explained.

Short of entering the gauntlet of online generics, some resort to what’s known as “clinic-hopping.” In addition to being used as treatment for HIV, Truvada is also widely used as post-exposure prophylaxis, or PEP, for instances in which, for example, an ER doctor is accidentally exposed to HIV on the job. PEP involves a weeks-long series of doses started within 72-hours after suspected exposure to HIV. So, some claim they’ve been exposed to HIV as a means of obtaining Truvada they intend to use preventatively. As Greg Owen, a London-based PrEP activist, wrote on his blog, “I know of people who will spend 1 day going around 2-3 clinics … collecting 3 month’s supply in one day, some of these ‘clinic hoppers’ take their PrEP pill every other day so 28 pills actually lasts them 2 months.” It’s believed that this approach to PrEP, which is called “reduced dosing,” can be effective, but no large scale studies have proven it.

Another avenue in countries where PrEP isn’t approved is finding a doctor willing to prescribe the drug for off-label use. But even if someone is able to find a doctor willing to color outside of the lines, it means paying full price for a very expensive drug. “That will cost you about 5,000 pounds a year just for the cost of the drugs,” he said. “For an American audience, that might not sound like a lot, but obviously we have a different health system, and for most of us that level of payment for a medication isn’t what we’re used to and for most people it’s not affordable.”

As it stands, PrEP is difficult enough to obtain, even for those with the financial means to pay for expensive online shipments or regularly cross borders. “We know that PrEP in its initial stages is going to be used by people with the disposable income to be able to pay 50 bucks worth for the drug a month, and there are people that can’t afford that,” said Nutland. “We care about ensuring PrEP isn’t just made available as what we’re calling a ’boutique intervention.’”

That is not only because of the health benefits, but the psychological ones too—particularly for gay men. “For so many people, going on PrEP is this overwhelming sense of peace of mind,” said Pickett. “When you’ve been fearful of death and dying and HIV and danger and risk every time you have sex, there’s this thing going on in your head that’s on the pillow next to you, that’s in the room with you. To have something in place that provides such robust protection that you can actually relax? It’s really, really powerful.”

That’s certainly true for Adam. He came out in the early ‘90s, when, as he put it, HIV seemed to inevitably lead to AIDS and, ultimately, death.

“That was so impressive that I never really came to embrace my own sexuality,” he said. “Instead, I was shaming myself and others for living our desires. PrEP is giving me back at least part of the ease I never really experienced.”
