Monsanto Weed Killer Found in Cheerios & Other Popular Foods !

Carcinogenic’ weedkiller found in American food at alarming levels.

A report by Food Democracy Now! and the Detox Project found alarming levels of glyphosate, the main ingredient in Monsanto’s prominent pesticide Roundup, in many of America’s most popular foods. The chemical has been classified by the World Health Organization as “probably carcinogenic.” For more on this, Dave Murphy, founder and executive director of Food Democracy Now!, joins ‘News With Ed.

Carey Gillam Veteran journalist; Research Director for U.S. Right to Know, a non-profit consumer education group.

Independent testing on an array of popular American food products found many samples contained residue levels of the weed killer called glyphosate, leading the nonprofit organization behind the testing to call for corporate and regulatory action to address consumer safety concerns.Image result for round up in cheerios

The herbicide residues were found in cookies, crackers, popular cold cereals and chips commonly consumed by children and adults, according to Food Democracy Now and the group’s “Detox Project,” which arranged for the testing at the San Francisco-based Anresco lab. Anresco uses liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), a method widely considered by the scientific community and regulators as the most reliable for analyzing glyphosate residues. The groups issued a report Monday that details the findings.

The announcement of the private tests comes as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is struggling with its own efforts to analyze how much of the herbicide residues might be present in certain foods. Though the FDA routinely tests foods for other pesticide residues, it never tested for glyphosate until this year. The testing for glyphosate residues was recently suspended, however. Glyphosate is under particular scrutiny now because last year the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified it as a probable human carcinogen. Glyphosate is the world’s most widely used herbicide and is the key ingredient in Monsanto Co.’s branded Roundup, as well as in hundreds of other products. The Environmental Protection Agency is now finalizing a risk assessment for glyphosate to determine if future use should be limited.

Nutrition-Facts-GMO-Label

The tests conducted by Anresco were done on 29 foods commonly found on grocery store shelves. Glyphosate residues were found in General Mills’ Cheerios at 1,125.3 parts per billion (ppb), in Kashi soft-baked oatmeal dark chocolate cookies at 275.57 ppb, and in Ritz Crackers at 270.24 ppb, according to the report. Different levels were found in Kellogg’s Special K cereal, Triscuit Crackers and several other products. The report noted that for some of the findings, the amounts were “rough estimates at best and may not represent an accurate representation of the sample.” The food companies did not respond to a request for comment.

The EPA sets a “maximum residue limit” (MRL), also known as a tolerance, for pesticide residues on food commodities, like corn and soybeans. MRLs for glyphosatevary depending upon the commodity. Finished food products like those tested at Anresco might contain ingredients from many different commodities.

The nonprofit behind the report said that concerns about glyphosate comes as research shows that Roundup can cause liver and kidney damage in rats at only 0.05 ppb, and additional studies have found that levels as low as 10 ppb can have toxic effects on the livers of fish. The groups criticized U.S. regulators for setting an acceptable daily intake (ADI) at for glyphosate at much higher levels than other countries consider safe. The United States has set the ADI for glyphosate at 1.75 milligrams per kilogram of bodyweight per day (mg/kg/bw/day) while the European Union has set it at 0.3, for instance. The EPA is supposed to set an ADI from all food and water sources that is at least 100 times lower than levels that have been demonstrated to cause no effect in animal testing. But critics assert that the EPA’s analyses have been unduly influenced by the agrichemical industry.

The groups said that the federal government should conduct an investigation into the “harmful effects of glyphosate on human health and the environment,” and the relationships between regulators and the agrichemical industry that has long touted the safety of glyphosate.

Monsanto has said repeatedly that there are no legitimate safety concerns regarding glyphosate when it is used as intended, and that toxicological studies in animals have demonstrated that glyphosate does not cause cancer, birth defects, DNA damage, nervous system effects, immune system effects, endocrine disruption or reproductive problems. The company, which has been reaping roughly $5 billion a year from glyphosate-based products, says any glyphosate residues in food are too minimal to be harmful.

Both the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the FDA have echoed Monsanto’s reassurances in the past, citing the chemical’s proven safety as justification for not including glyphosate residue testing in annual programs that test thousands of food products each year for hundreds of different types of pesticides. But the lack of routine government monitoring has made it impossible for consumers or regulators to determine what levels of glyphosate are present in foods, and questions about the chemical’s safety persist.

A key reason glyphosate residues persist in so many food products has to do with its widespread use in food production. Glyphosate is sprayed directly on several crops genetically engineered to tolerate the herbicide, such as corn, soybeans, sugar beets, and canola. Glyphosate is also sprayed directly on many types of conventional crops ahead of harvest, including wheat, oats and barley. In all, glyphosate is used in some fashion in the production of at least 70 food crops, according to the EPA, including a range of fruits, nuts and veggies. Even spinach growers use glyphosate. In the report issued Monday, the groups call for a permanent ban on the use of glyphosate as a pre-harvest drying agent because of the residue levels.

A recent analysis done by a senior FDA chemist found glyphosate residues in several types of oatmeal products, including baby food, and in several honey samples. The glyphosate residues found in honey were higher than allowed in the European Union.

Julian Assange Says Trump Won’t Be Allowed To Win, “Clinton And ISIS Are Funded By The Same Money”

One day after Julian Assange officially revealed for the first time that the source of hacked Podesta and DNC emails in Wikileaks’ possession is not Russia, in the second excerpt from the John Pilger Special, to be broadcast by RT on Saturday Julian Assange accuses Hillary Clinton of misleading Americans about the true scope of Islamic State’s support from Washington’s Middle East allies.

As previously reported, in an August 17, 2014 email made public WikiLeaks last month, Hillary Clinton, who had served as secretary of state until the year before, urges John Podesta, then an advisor to Barack Obama, to “bring pressure” on Qatar and Saudi Arabia, “which are providing clandestine financial and logistic support to ISIS and other radical Sunni groups.”

“I think this is the most significant email in the whole collection,” Assange, whose whistle-blowing site released three tranches of Clinton-related emails over the past year, told Pilger in the interview.

“All serious analysts know, and even the US government has agreed, that some Saudi figures have been supporting ISIS and funding ISIS, but the dodge has always been that it is some “rogue” princes using their oil money to do whatever they like, but actually the government disapproves. But that email says that it is the government of Saudi Arabia, and the government of Qatar that have been funding ISIS.”

As recounted by RT, Assange and Pilger, who sat down for their 25-minute interview at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London where the whistleblower has been a refugee since 2012, also talked about the conflict of interest between Clinton’s official post, her husband’s nonprofit, and the Middle East officials, whose stated desire to fight terrorism may not have been sincere.

John Pilger: The Saudis, the Qataris, the Moroccans, the Bahrainis, particularly the first two, are giving all this money to the Clinton Foundation, while Hillary Clinton is secretary of state, and the State Department is approving massive arms sales, particularly Saudi Arabia.

Julian Assange: Under Hillary Clinton – and the Clinton emails reveal a significant discussion of it – the biggest-ever arms deal in the world was made with Saudi Arabia: more than $80 billion. During her tenure, the total arms exports from the US doubled in dollar value.

JP: Of course, the consequence of that is that this notorious jihadist group, called ISIL or ISIS, is created largely with money from people who are giving money to the Clinton Foundation?

JA: Yes.

The conversation then turns to the imminent presidential election: Pilger questioned Assange over increasingly frequent accusations from the Clinton camp, and Western media, that WikiLeaks is looking to swing next week’s US presidential election in favor of Donald Trump – perhaps at Russia’s behest.

However, just as he did last week, Assange again dismissed the prospect of Trump, who is almost tied in the polls, winning as unlikely, and not necessarily due to his standing with the electorate.

‘Trump won’t be permitted to win’

“My analysis is that Trump would not be permitted to win. Why do I say that? Because he has had every establishment off his side. Trump does not have one establishment, maybe with the exception of the Evangelicals, if you can call them an establishment,” said Assange. “Banks, intelligence, arms companies, foreign money, etc. are all united behind Hillary Clinton. And the media as well. Media owners, and the journalists themselves.”

JP:The accusations that WikiLeaks is in league with the Russians and you hear people saying, “Well, why doesn’t WikiLeaks investigate and publish emails on Russia?”

JA: We have published over 800,000 documents of various kinds that relate to Russia. Most of those are critical. And… a great many books have come out of our publications about Russia, most of which are critical. And our documents have gone on to be used in quite a number of court cases, refugee cases of people fleeing some kinds of claimed political persecution in Russia, which they use our documents to back up.

JP:Do you take yourself a view of the US election? Do you have a preference for Clinton or Trump?

JA: Donald Trump – what does he represent in the American mind and in the European mind? He represents American “white trash,” deplorable and irredeemable. Basically, the same thing. It means, from a… establishment or educated, cosmopolitan, urbane perspective, these people are, you know, like the rednecks, and you can’t… like, they are just… you can never deal with them. And because he so clearly – through his words and actions and the type of people that turns up at his rallies – represents the people who are not the upper-middle-class-educated, there is a fear of seeming to be associated in any way with that, a social fear that lowers the class status of anyone who can be accused of somehow assisting in any way Trump, including criticizing Clinton. And if you look at how the middle class gains its economic and social power, it makes absolute sense.

He is right, but the same was said about Brexit.

The legendary pop star Prince died of an opioid overdose, according to test results that were leaked to AP by a law enforcement source.

Medical examinations of the pop artist, who was found dead on April 21 at his Minnesota estate, revealed an overdose of opioid painkillers, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. AP reported that he is “close to the investigation”but was not authorized to speak to the media.

The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office later came out and officially announced that his death was determined to be caused by fentanyl, an extremely powerful synthetic opioid that is even stronger than morphine or heroine.

Prince’s remains were cremated after the autopsy, but law enforcement officials were waiting for the toxicology report before confirming the cause of death.

The artist was addicted to prescription painkillers, according to Rolling Stone.

Born Prince Rogers Nelson in 1958, the prolific artist produced 37 studio albums and sold more than 100 million records globally.Thousands of unreleased recordings were found in a vault at his Paisley Park estate.

Because Prince left no will, the wealth management company Bremer Trust, was appointed temporary special administrator of his estate by a Carver County judge in early May.

Fans of the artist are not convinced by the official explanation, pointing out that Prince was a strict vegan and Jehovah’s Witness, who did not smoke or even drink coffee.

Over 70 killed in triple Baghdad bombings & more than 140 injured in act of Global Terrorism.

At least 72 people were killed in Baghdad when three bombs went off Tuesday, according to police and medical sources cited by Reuters. The blasts affected areas in the north and south of the Iraqi capital, as well as the Sadr City district.
All three blasts, which appeared not to be connected, struck different areas of Baghdad, and extend a deadly spate of attacks that the Iraqi capital has had to endure this year. The worst explosion hit a district in the north of Baghdad, killing 38 people and injuring at least 70 others.

A spokesman for Baghdad Operations Command told state television that the attacker in the Al-Shaab district in the north of the Baghdad had detonated a suicide vest in coordination with a bomb which had been planted.

The two Al-Shaab blasts hit a predominantly Shiite area, while initial investigations claim the attacker was a woman. Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) said it was responsible for the deadly attacks.

This was followed by a car bomb in the southern neighborhood of Al-Rasheed which left six people dead, while another 21 received injuries.

A spokesman for Baghdad Operations Command told state television that the attacker in the Al-Shaab district in the north of the city had detonated a suicide vest in coordination with a bomb which had been planted.

A few hours later, Iraqi officials cited by Reuters said a suicide car bomb struck a crowded market in the mainly Shiite Sadr City, killing 28 and injuring 57, bringing the total death toll in the capital up to at least 72, while over 140 people have suffered injuries.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi ordered the arrest of the senior official in charge of Al-Shaab’s security, though his office did not give a reason for why he was detained, Reuters reports.

The ISIS terror group was also responsible for bombings which killed around 100 people in Baghdad last week.

The three latest attacks come just two days after IS launched assaults on a state cooking gas factory in the north of Baghdad, which killed 14 people and injured a further 27.

The attack was carried out using a car explosive at the factory entrance early on Sunday morning.

A further group of at least six terrorists arrived at the scene wearing explosive vests and became embroiled in a gun battle with police. Members of the government’s security forces were amongst those killed.

On May 11, three successive bombings which killed at least 88 people.

Police said an SUV rigged with explosives parked near a beauty salon in a busy market in Sadr City caused the most serious blast, which left at least 63 people dead.

Subsequent explosions occurred in the Kadhimiya – an area of the city considered a center of Shiite Islam – where 18 civilians were killed, and the Sunni district of Jamiya, where seven people lost their lives. IS claimed responsibility for all of the attacks.

Hundreds Arrested At ‘Democracy Spring’ Sit-In At The US Capitol

Hundreds Arrested At ‘Democracy Spring’ Sit-In At The US Capitol

Record for most people arrested at one protest.

Hundreds of “Democracy Spring” protesters have been arrested on the steps of the US Capitol.

Thousands of activist arrived in Washington DC, after a ten day, 140-mile (225km) march from Philadelphia’s Liberty Bell, in protest against corruption in politics.

Starting April 11th, thousands of Americans will sit-in on the US Capitol in Washington, DC in what will be the largest act of civil disobedience this century.

According to Russia Today the protest appears to have broken the record for the number of people arrested at the US Capitol.

Police announced they “ran out of space” for arrested activists, Ruptly’s Paulina Leonovich reported.

At least 10 buses have been used to transport arrestees from the sit-in at the Capitol.

“People are fed up with the system, they are fed up with the corruption, and we want free and fair elections,” Cenk Uygur, host of the TV show Young Turks and one of the participants in the protest, told RT. “This is our core American right.”

Arrests being lined up in front of a police bus.

“The fight begins today. It doesn’t mean we win today. But in the end, we always win,” Uygur said. “Progressives have never lost. We won in civil rights, we won in women’s rights, we won in gay rights, and we’re going to win in getting our democracy back.”

With the goal “to claim the democracy we were promised”, various advocacy groups headed up by Ralph Nader’s Public Citizen and 99Rise.org, plan to hold a “mass sit-in” over the next eight days in the hope of persuading Congress to tackle “corruption of big money in politics and ensure free and fair elections”, according to campaign director Kai Newkirk.

In addition to putting their bodies on the line, activists will use technology to hold “call-in days”, submit online petitions, and organize “Twitter storms” to raise awareness of their campaign, which they have described as “one of the largest civil disobedience actions in a generation.”

After arriving in DC on Sunday, organizers held civil disobedience training for activists ahead of Monday’s advance on the Capitol, with attendance higher than expected.

Some attendees are understood to have been turned away due to the large number of people and asked to return for Monday’s training classes instead, which have also attracted large crowds.

“We hope that it will be the beginning of the end of the corruption of our democracy,” Newkirk told RT, stressing their main pledge is to make Congress pass “four bills that we’re pushing for,” referring to theGovernment by the People Act, Fair Elections Now Act, the Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2015 &Voter Empowerment Act of 2015, and the Democracy for All Amendment.

While the first day of the sit-in includes everyone, organizers have drawn up a schedule of events with each day focusing on a different theme and demographic, including elders, young folks, students, and activists from racial justice and labor solidarity movements.
