What did Thomas Paine, Samuel Adams & Ben Franklin have in common? They each served in some capacity as the Independent media of their day. The most important roles they played were in educating & inspiring the public to take action. The job that they did in spreading the message of Liberty was tedious & dangerous, in that their actions were considered treasonous & if caught would lead to their certain death.
Thomas Paine played an integral part in the American Revolution. Sadly many Americans are unaware of the influence & role that he played in shaping the thought process of the people in his day. Through his writing of Common Sense in 1776 & the pro Revolutionary series the American Crisis 1776-1783 he changed the perception of the public by writing in a style easily understood by the common man of his day. He put to words the reasons American colonists should be free from British rule. John Adams, the second U.S. president, thought so highly of this work that he wrote “Without the pen of the author of Common Sense, the sword of Washington would have been raised in vain.”
