Residents in upper Manhattan are reporting brown water flowing from their taps after the city’s Department of Environmental Protection had to suddenly shut down a water main for emergency maintenance, officials say.
People in Washington Heights and Inwood began reporting discolored water coming from their faucets Friday afternoon.
It’s not clear what sort of emergency prompted the need for maintenance, but when the water main was shut off, it disturbed the water delivery system, officials said.
Residents with discolored water should report it to 311 and then let the water run for a few minutes until the water is clear and cold.
An NBC 4 New York producer who lives in Washington Heights said running the faucet for half an hour hasn’t cleared the water. The DEP says it’s in the process of opening fire hydrants in the area to flush out the discolored water.
