Using heat maps, data and statistics these helicopters are flying above “hot-zones” to monitor criminals before crimes occur.
The LAPD has said it is creating a “positive effect”, others however have declared the method to be intrusive and unnecessary. Craig Uchida a policing consultant who also analyzes data says that it is too early to proclaim a definitive link between crime being lowered in connection with the helicopters. However people like Captain Gary Walters have said, “It’s extremely cutting edge, it’s different. It’s nothing that we’ve ever done before with this specificity.”
In areas where the helicopters monitored, crime did fall and when the helicopters stopped patrolling those areas it went up again, but does this justify the use of “pre-crime”? Does this encourage the mentality? Is there a risk of innocent victims being targeted?
